California Proposition 65

Modified on Fri, 30 Sep 2022 at 02:07 PM

Proposition 65 is a Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act that Californians voted for in November 1986 which requires businesses to provide warnings to Californians about significant exposures to chemicals that can cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.  These chemicals can be found in various products that are purchased, in your homes or workplaces, or in the environment. Proposition 65 enables California’s citizens to make informed decisions about what they buy and may expose themselves to. Proposition 65 also prohibits California’s businesses from knowingly discharging copious amounts of their listed chemicals into sources of drinking water.

Proposition 65 requires California to publish the list of chemicals known to cause any form of harm, and this list is updated once a year. It has grown to include approximately 900 chemicals since it was first published in 1987.
